Industrial and hazardous-location electrical

Electrical construction, upgrades and maintenance for plants, terminals and other industrial sites, including classified hazardous locations.

Motor-driven pumps on concrete plinths under a pipe rack at an industrial site

DuCom has wired industrial plants since the days of relay logic, and has kept up as controls moved to microprocessors and PLCs. Today that work is at manufacturing plants, petroleum storage facilities, natural gas and chemical plants, and paper mills.

Hazardous and classified locations

Much of our current work is at bulk fuel and propane terminals, LNG facilities, oil and gas terminals and transportation sites across New England. We build and maintain electrical systems in classified hazardous locations, including Class I, Division 1 areas, with explosion-proof wiring where the classification calls for it.

These are live operations, where downtime, safety and regulations all call for careful planning. We plan each job around the facility's schedule and safety rules, so the work gets done without putting the operation at risk.

Power, motors and controls

  • Industrial power distribution
  • Motor control centers and VFDs
  • Controls and instrumentation
  • PLC and HMI troubleshooting

Tested before start-up

Our long attention to signal shielding and circuit separation has given customers many years of trouble-free control installations. Every conductor from 120 to 15,000 volts is megger tested after installation, and conductors over 600 volts are hi-pot tested before they are energized. Loop checks and simulations come next, so start-up holds no surprises.

On the job

Our work

  • A DuCom Electric box truck parked on gravel beside a large white storage tank, with a technician in hi-vis at the open rear door
  • A tanker moored alongside a fuel pier, with pipelines and a small white building running along the dock
  • A technician in hi-vis kneels beside a pump motor between white pipes and storage tanks

Questions

Common questions

All questions

Do you work in classified hazardous locations?

Yes. DuCom installs and maintains electrical systems in classified hazardous locations, including Class I, Division 1 areas, at bulk fuel and propane terminals, LNG facilities, oil and gas terminals and other industrial sites. We are used to working inside live operations and plan each job around the facility's schedule and safety rules.

How do you test new electrical work before start-up?

Every conductor from 120 to 15,000 volts is megger tested after installation, and conductors over 600 volts are hi-pot tested before they are energized. Loop checks and simulations follow, so start-up holds no surprises.

Who do you work for?

DuCom works for facility owners and operators, contractors and engineers. We have built long working relationships with all three since 1985.
